Finally Up and Moving (Day 4)

Day 3 of Post-Op they say is supposed to be the hardest day. For us it was a great day, but is was also very busy.  It was so busy, in fact, I didn’t even have time to think to take pictures or video. Sorry guys. We will definately take video tomorrow… and I think that we will have some good stuff to show you. Probably of Kristi walking around.

This morning, Kristi woke up in a good deal of pain. She actually hadn’t pressed her morphin button for most of the night. She said that she was dreaming and thinking, “Why am I in so much pain?”… so she had to press the morphine button about 5 times when she woke up, just to get her pain under control. Once she had it under control, we stood up for about a minute and then sat back down…  She has had good pain management today.

At about 10 o’clock the nurse came in and took her urinary cathader out. We tried to use the bathroom after that with no success. After the first time, we were in business and this was very exciting for us. I think it gave Kristi sometime tangible to show her that she is healing and moving forward.

We found out all too well today that getting up when you are in a lot of pain is a big process. We take it all for granted (like just sitting up), but for Kristi to sit up takes a LOT of work. She had to use half of her energy just to scoot to the edge of the bed and stand up. The first two times that she got up, she was very nauseous afterwards… and actually vomitted the second time. Everytime that it was time to move, there was a whole process of things to do. We had to get the portable oxygen canister the first couple times, take care of all her tubes and wires, and help her get up and walking. Very exciting stuff for us though when she got up the third or fourth time and she didn’t feel nauseous at all. This also was really exciting… at least for me.

I was really proud of her in about the middle of the day, because she decided to push the envelope a little and go for a walk. She walked outside of her room and made it about 7 feet from the door before she had to turn around because she was feeling sick and tired. She did so good though.

We are hoping that the Valium that she takes tonight before bed will help her to not be in extreme pain tomorrow when she wakes up. Our days are winding down here at the hospital, but if the progression continues at this pace, I have a feeling it will be another week before we can go back to Texas. Kristi’s Aunt and Uncle have said that we can stay with them as long as we need to, and I am very thankful for this. They are amazing people and I know we will enjoy every minute we are with them.

I am sorry that this blog is written more factually, but I am pretty worn out from today. I am looking forward to blogging tomorrow, because I have a feeling that it will be a lot more fun and engaging. Thanks guys for being faithful readers. It has been good for Kristi to see how well this blog is doing.

Dan, you did a good job on this blog. I know you think it was really factual but it was great to get the play by plays and see how the day progressed. You’re doing a great job. I know it’s tiring and I hope you both get some much needed rest tonight. I hope the meds work tonight so she can be comfortable. It was great seeing you on the call tonight. It really was a highlight of our night. Kristi, thanks for hangin in there with us it was really good to talk to you. You’re a trooper and you’ve got a great attitude. It was fun to see Mom too. Dan…you’re caring for Kristi with so much tenderness and love. I thank the Lord that she has you (and of course her family) by her side through this! I love the part in the video where Kristi is demonstrating the breathing. It made me smile! :) Your positive attitude is contagious, Kristi. That’s so great that you were able to walk for a little bit, but you didn’t push your body too hard. I’ll be praying for your body to get used to walking and normal activities again. Keep up the good work! You’re doing an awesome job! ;)

    Love and Hugs!

    Hey Dan and Kristi,

Glad to hear that things are moving forward! Kristi, I’ve heard about how hard it is to move, much less walk for most patience after surgery. It’s tough, but in the long run it helps a lot. Hang in there! Grizzly and Galahad are doing great! Sometimes there a bit mischievous, but they are fun. I have spent a lot of time at your place, because it’s the only environment worth studying in, and the cats keep me company (cause I don’t have much of a social life without u guys). Well hey I have to wrap it up cause I have to get back to work. I love you guys, and am thankful that the lord is blessing you in every moment.
