Good Parts & Very Bad Parts (Day 3)
So today was more like a roller coaster. Kristi slept through the night, no problem at all… except the occasional nurse checking vitals signs. She woke up in good spirits and we were ready to take on the day… because as we saw it, nothing could have been as bad as the day before.
She is eating good, and at about 2:00 we noticed that her iv had pulled out just enough to be a problem. They tried to re-stick her, but Kristi in a horrible iv person. The nurse couldn’t get it in. The nurse talked to the anesthesiologist and he suggested maybe transfering her to oral meds. So the pharmacy took a while to get her oral medication up, and while they were doing this another nurse came in to change the sheets. They got Kristi up in the chair and she turned ghost white. Heart rate went up and blood pressure dropped, so we tried to get her back in bed as quick as possible. We got the oral meds (Percocet) in her, and it was in her system for about 30 minutes but did not seem to be doing a thing. After that she really started feeling the pain. On a 1-5 scale, she shot up to a 6. And about 5 minutes after that she was at an 8. This was worse than anything she had felt yet. She said that she could feel everything in her and it was all painful. She was in so much pain she actually started shaking. This was no good, and I knew that I had to get her mind off of it, so as they were sticking her and sticking her trying to get the iv in (about 7 times), I was breathing with her and helping her get her mind off of the pain. It was working well. We were making faces and playing games with the blowing. She actually got her pain under control! They eventually got the iv in and after about an hour and a half she was asleep and the morphine was kicking in. It was pretty intense. They even had to call in the iv therapist (she only does IV’s) because none of the nurses could sink an IV in her. I tell you, that wore me out.
She slept for about 2 hours, and we got some amazing flowers and plants from the Lavin’s, Mountain Hideaway, the Oregon Family, and her mom… and I walked around to get my nerves down as she slept. Thank you so much guys for the flowers and encouraging words. It really does mean a lot to us.
Then she woke up feeling a lot better, so we gradually sat her up in the bed so that she could slowly transition back to the chair. She and her mom started talking as I fell asleep on the couch. When I woke up, our amazing doctor (Dr. Georgeson) came in and talked to us and checked up on Kristi. I tell you, he is one of the best doctors I have ever seen. You can genuinely tell that he cares about you, which I think is a must for a good doctor.
After that we got her eating and then we transfered her to the chair with minimal pain. She did amazing. She got pale for a while, but the longer she sat there the better she felt. She actually rode it out for 2 hours. She is a trooper. We just got her back in the bed, and she is resting before getting her sitting upright again in bed. They are pulling her urinary cathader out tomorrow morning, so she needs to get used to being upright… at least a little.
So overall it was a good day. She is doing really well. She had a really intense bout there from about 2 – 4:30… but other than that it has been good progress. Thank you all for your prayers and support.
